Jurong East, together with Jurong Lake, offers an exciting opportunity to be developed into the biggest lakeside destination for business and leisure. The two areas are jointly known as the Jurong Lake District. The master plan for Jurong Lake District (JLD) was first released in 2008 as part of URA’s efforts to grow new employment centres outside the Central Area to bring more quality jobs and recreational options closer to homes.
Since then, the district is shaping up as a vibrant commercial node, especially around the Jurong East MRT station. The subsequent announcements of two game-changing infrastructure projects i.e. Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail and Tuas Mega Port, led to a review of the earlier JLD master plan. The High Speed Rail is a strategic project that aims to improve connectivity between Singapore and Malaysia, and enhances business-to-business linkages and people-to-people exchanges. The consolidation of all of Singapore’s container port operations at the next-generation Tuas Port in the medium to long term, in close proximity to Jurong Lake District, gives us the opportunity to reshape the port, logistics and industrial value chains and capitalise on the growth in global trade and business opportunities.
A new master plan was unveiled in August 2017 to transform JLD into a smart and sustainable mixed-use business district to support our next phase of economic transformation and make it into a distinctive new gateway to Singapore. With a land area of more than 360ha area, JLD comprises two precincts, Jurong Gateway and Lakeside. (source: URA)
